Should you start a podcast? If you look at the success that some businesses have had from podcasting, the answer may seem obvious. But before you start purchasing equipment and brainstorming a clever intro, take a step back and ask yourself, “Do I have something to say?”
This is the question posed by Joel Comm, co-host of the wildly successful Bad Crypto Podcast. Much like starting a business, the decision to start a podcast should be because you believe in what you’re doing. If you have a message and a passion for sharing it, you’re in a good place to begin.
Joel Comm joins the Content Experience Show to discuss creating a podcast that earned over 3.5 million downloads in less than one year, and how to approach starting one of your own.
In This Episode:
Starting a Podcast
While the Bad Crypto Podcast isn’t Joel’s first, it’s been his most massively successful podcast venture to date. He explains how it's been a matter of pairing the right message with the right content, and delivering it to the right audience at the right time.
“Content is content. It’s finding a way to communicate what it is you want to say to your audience in a way that they want to consume it.” — @joelcomm
How to Approach Sponsorship
Although Joel’s podcast took off rather quickly, there was a time in the beginning when he and his co-host had to seek out and pitch sponsors. He explains how they did this, and how they approach sponsorship now that the podcast has become so successful.
“People email us, or contact us virtually every day asking how they can be on the show.” — @joelcomm
Promoting a Podcast
Once a new episode of the Bad Crypto podcast is released, it gets posted on their blog, as well as distributed through their social media channels. Joel explains how because of the support of their online communities, they’ve had to rely very little on paid advertising, and instead have word of mouth marketing to thank.
“If you've got a message so compelling that others want to share it for you, you've achieved marketing Nirvana.” — @joelcomm
