If we’ve learned anything in the age of Buzzfeed and Tumblr, it’s that there’s nothing quite like a GIF to perfectly sum up exactly how you’re feeling in certain moment (except maybe using your words, but that’s much less hilarious). Lucky for us, Pinterest agrees and has at long last allowed GIFs to be pinned the way they were meant to be – ANIMATED!
From the adorably-titled “Oh, How Pinteresting!” blog:
“The well-timed GIF may be the greatest thing to have happened to the internet since emoticons, and lots of people have said they’d love to see playable GIFs on Pinterest. Starting today, we support GIFs in all their animated glory! There are already tens of millions of GIF Pins on Pinterest, so you’ve got plenty to choose from. And, approximately a million people a day on Pinterest are exposed to a GIF a day. Go ahead and send your friend a bit of midday hilarity or start collecting all your favorite GIFs, so you’re armed and ready to unveil them when you’re in the mood for a good laugh. For starters, you’ll be able to play your GIFs on the web, but we’ll be sure to bring them to your mobile soon.”
Considering Pinterest is pretty much entirely visual, this isn’t a surprising move – GIFs say with little, animated loops what we can’t (or just don’t feel like) saying, and they’re not going anywhere for the foreseeable future. By enabling GIF animation, they’ll keep users within the Pinterest platform instead of booting them off to another site that’s hosting it (if you’ve been following the Uberflip blog at all, you know we’re all about keeping visitors in a centralized place).
Do you think this is a good move for Pinterest? Great for engagement or no big whoop? Let us know in the comments. Cheers!
