Time and time again, we’ve heard from Uberflip customers that one of the best elements of Hubs is the ability to thoroughly customize them to fit their brand and design tastes. So as we continue to roll out new features, many of them are focused on giving you more control of the way your content is presented - the latest being Custom Menus.
Previously, a Hub’s menu was located on the left side and categories defaulted to reflect the type of content being pulled in, e.g. Social, Blog, etc. Now, you can style, label and arrange the categories in your menu how you want - and even choose whether your menu is placed on the left of your Hub or at the top.
Let’s break it down by going through each step of customizing your brand new menu.
From within the application, head to “Appearance” from the left-hand navigation bar and then select “Menu”.
You’ll see an option called “Menu Style” which lets you switch from a Left Menu, with left-side navigation and icons (the default style) and Top Menu, with top banner navigation and text descriptions. There’s also an option to change your menu color, although this only applies to the icons in Left Menus.
Below, switch “Menu Settings” to Custom - this will allow you to rearrange your Hub categories as you see fit. Having your Menu Settings on default means it will be updated automatically based on your Streams.
After switching to custom, you can add and arrange categories on the fly. Hit the + icon to add a menu item, then choose to add either a Section Head (which can have other categories nested under it), a website or a Stream link. In this case, we’ll start with a Section Head, which is what you would do if you were starting from scratch.
Label the category what you like, e.g. “Blog”, and upload the icon of your choice. Then hit “Add Menu”.
Now that we’ve created a Section Head, let’s add a blog feed to it. Hover over the section underneath your Menu Item and select “Add Nested Menu Item” when it appears.
Here, you can choose to either link to an external site from the menu or choose from feeds that you’ve already pulled into your Hub. Here we chose a TechCrunch feed we have in this test Hub.
You can keep adding Nested Menu Items depending on how you want to fill out that category. For instance, we could pull a range of blog feeds in and add them as separate blog Streams under this section.
But say you wanted to add several different types of Streams under one section - that’s possible too. As long as you’ve already pulled the feeds you want into your Hub to begin with, you can arrange them in the Custom Menu however you like.
For instance, if we wanted to create a “Mixed Bag” stream with different Streams of content, all we need to do is create that Section Head the same way we create the Blogs section, and nest those feeds under it.
Once again, we’ll hit “Add Nested Menu Item” and, in this case, choose a Stream Link to start adding existing content Streams under this section. We’ve chosen to add a SlideShare, Twitter and blog Stream to this section. This is big - prior to Custom Menus, there was no way to group different types of Streams together (for instance, social feeds and blog feeds).
Now, you have even further control over the way your content is organized and displayed. Not only that, but you can freely switch between the Default Menu and the Custom Menu you’ve created if you’re inclined to do so - any changes you’ve made to the Custom Menu will be saved whether you have the Custom Menu turned on or off.
Are you as excited about Custom Menus as we are? We hope so!
