A Countdown of 10 New Year’s Resolutions for Marketers (with GIFs)

marketing resolutions

Chances are your 2015 started with promises of a “new year, new me”.  However, I'm guessing that 2014 for some of you also began with a similar promise.  So we've decided to pull together this list of resolutions that we tend to hear a lot from marketers (this year and last):

In the spirit of a new year, and a fresh start, let's count  down our top 10 resolutions for marketers!

10.Try to be a morning person (or at least look alive in those 8 am meetings)

morning person

Especially those Monday morning meetings where you are more interested in sleeping than the complimentary coffee or muffin platter. Sometimes you’re just not a morning person. But you can change! Or so we like to tell ourselves.

9. Answer emails promptly—Avoid the late reply apology

answer emails promptly

We know that sometimes emails just pile up in your inbox. But like a pile of dishes in the sink, they'll only get worse the longer they're ignored. Answer them ASAP! Avoid the awkward “Sorry for the late reply…” replies. They were so 2014.

8. Shake off the angry emails and the content flops

shake it off

Just remember, the haters are going to hate, hate, hate.  But you just need to shake, shake, shake it off. Things go wrong sometimes or don't pan out how you'd expect, but it's not the end of the world; there's always next time!

7. Spend more (productive) time on social media

social media

Unlike the bulk of the time when we use social media for personal reasons (read: procrastination), you should resolve to use it for more productive purposes.  Like hunting down GIFs for your blog post!

6.  Learn how to write more good

write better

That is a pretty accurate depiction of me trying to write a blog post after the winter break (except on a computer). It's definitely on my list of skills to work on. I hear Ann Handley's Everybody Writes is pretty good for that. Still waiting for someone to write Everybody Designs so I can upgrade from MS Paint to Photoshop.

5. Try to include more visuals in your content — especially GIFs!!!

More visuals! We've gotta learn to grab our audience's attention and lead them on a magical, colorful, content journey. A picture's worth a thousand words, right? A GIF is worth a million!

4. More data-driven decisions; Less "following your heart”

follow your heart

I know, I know. Follow your heart on the way to love and overall happiness. But sometimes you have to follow your data to contribute to the bottom line!

3. Develop leaner processes (YEAH!)

lean process

Yay! Who doesn't want to put in less effort to get more stuff done? Nobody, that's who! That doesn't mean you should cut corners, but it's good to resolve to try to find faster ways to get from point A to point B.

2. Make some small dent in this vast, far-reaching, unknowable space we call The Internet.

internet

Many a marketer dreams of changing the internet.  We all see examples of "meh" marketing: those bad ads in and around the websites we frequent, those bland blog posts and spammy emails. The world wide web is a big (and noisy) place. Makes you feel kind of insignificant. But not this year!

1.  And finally... Try to be nicer to others

be nice

Sometimes there's that one penguin— er, person— that you want to push into freezing cold waters. But being nice to others, online and offline, helping instead of hurting will benefit you and make the world a better place to live.  So smile on your brother/sister, everybody get together and try to love one another right now!

Get psyched for 2015!

It's a new year and a fresh chapter in our lives! However fast the world around you seems to change, remember that you're capable of big change too!  So ready to tackle 2015? Good. Because it's time to get down to business!
